When called upon to write about the Golden Age of the American Broadway musical (arguably the 1940s to ’60s) it is now often necessary to discuss many great performers in the past tense. There is however one wonderful exception: the legendary Barbara Cook. This beloved singer one of the glories of Broadway is still dazzling audiences today with a voice remarkably unchanged after a career of more than five decades. While Ms. Cook’s career as a concert and cabaret artist is well documented on video and audio recordings this collection gives us for the first time a glimpse of Barbara Cook during the heyday of her Broadway career. Cook sings a wide range of music – from Viennese operetta and American folksongs to Broadway classics and pop standards – and is excitingly partnered by Broadway luminaries Alfred Drake Robert Goulet and Anita Gillette. Among the many highlights are the selections from Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man featuring original cast members Cook and The Buffalo Bills.
