ERASERHEAD – Filmed intermittently over the course of a five-year period, David Lynch’s radical feature debut stars Jack Nance as Henry Spencer, a man living in an unnamed industrial wasteland. Upon learning that a past romance has resulted in an impending pregnancy, Henry agrees to wed mother-to-be Mary (Charlotte Stewart) and moves her into his tiny, squalid flat. Their baby is born hideously mutated, a strange, reptilian creature whose piercing cries never cease. Mary soon flees in horror and disgust, leaving Henry to fall prey to the seduction of the girl across the hall (Judith Anna Roberts). DUNE – David Lynch wades through dark waters in his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s cult science fiction novel. In condensing Herbert’s rambling and complex book by eliminating characters and compacting events, Lynch succeeds in rendering the story incomprehensible to those unfamiliar with the novel and making the film look like a sketchy greatest hits collection of the book for Herbert fans. The story takes place in the year 10,191. The universe is governed through a system of feudal rule, presided over by Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV (Jose Ferrer), who appears to take his marching orders from something that resembles a talking vagina. In the kingdom are two rival houses — the House of Atreides and the House of Harkonnen. Each house is trying to gain dominion over the universe, but that dominion can only be gained by the house that controls the Spice, a special substance that permits the folding of time. The Spice is only available on the desert world of Arrakis, or Dune. Shaddam, tired of the feuding between the two houses, permits the Atreides to take over the Spice production on Dune, while secretly working with the Harkonnens to launch a sneak attack on the Atreides and destroy them. The leader of the Atreides is Duke Leto (Jurgen Prochnow), who rules with the help of his concubine Jessica (Francesca Annis) and son Paul (Kyle MacLachlan). The rival Harkonnens are headed by the pus-oozing degenerate Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Kenneth McMillan, in a thoroughly through-the-roof performance) and his two unsavory nephews, Rabban (Paul L. Smith) and Feyd (Sting). When his father is murdered by the Harkonnens, Paul escapes to Dune, where he is greeted by the Fremen (the desert dwellers on Dune who prepare the Spice) as the messiah foretold in Fremen legend. Paul assumes the mantle of messiah and leads the Fremen in a revolt that topples the balance of power in the universe. BLUE VELVET – Kyle Maclachlan stars as Jeffrey Beaumont, a square-jawed young man who returns to his picture-perfect small town when his father suffers a stroke. Walking through a field near his home, Jeff discovers a severed human ear, which he immediately brings to the police. Their disinterest sparks Jeff’s curiosity, and he is soon drawn into a dangerous drama that’s being played out by a lounge singer, Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) and the ether-addicted Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper). The sociopathic Booth has kidnapped Dorothy’s young son and is using the child as a bargaining chip to repeatedly beat, humiliate and rape Dorothy. WILD AT HEART – Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern play a pair of lovers on the run in David Lynch’s surrealist road movie Wild At Heart. Cage’s Sailor Ripley is a violent ex-convict with an Elvis Presley fixation who falls in love with Dern’s Lula Pace Fortune, the daughter of a rich, but mentally unstable, Southern belle named Marietta (Diane Ladd, Dern’s real-life mother). Just after Sailor is released from prison, where he was jailed for brutally killing one of Marietta’s thugs, he and Lula take off on a wild cross-country trip, pursued by his parole officer, her mother, criminals, bounty hunters, and detectives. Along the way, Sailor and Lula have a lot of sex, share their pasts, share their respective obsessions for Elvis and The Wizard of Oz, and meet a lot of bizarre characters, including a seedy ex-marine (Willem Dafoe) who persuades Sailor to participate in a bank robbery. TWIN PEAKS – Pete Martell (Jack Nance) finds the body of high school student Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) wrapped in plastic by the water at the Packard Sawmill dock. As the town slowly gets word of her murder, Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) from the FBI arrives in the Washington town of Twin Peaks to investigate. Assisted by Sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean), Cooper retrieves Laura’s secret diary and a videotape. At the morgue, Cooper discovers the letter “R” from under Laura’s fingernail, evidence similar to the murder case of Theresa Banks a year ago. Meanwhile, at the Great Northern Hotel, Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) disrupts her father’s business deal, causing the would-be investors to back out. Deputy Hawk (Michael Horse) and Deputy Andy Brennan (Harry Goaz) locate the scene of the murder and find half of a gold heart necklace. LOST HIGHWAY – Fred (Bill Pullman) is an avant-garde jazz saxophonist who shares a luxurious but fashionably barren house with his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette). Fred suspects that Renee may be unfaithful to him, but realizes he has bigger things to worry about when a series of videotapes appear at his door that prove someone is watching his home from the outside and inside. When Renee is found murdered, Fred finds himself behind bars, but one morning Fred is no longer in his cell. He has seemingly been transformed into Pete Drayton (Balthazar Getty), a young auto mechanic who foolishly allowed himself to get involved with the wife of gangster Dick Laurent (Robert Loggia), a luscious blonde named Alice who looks exactly like Renee. In sci-fi epic ‘Dune’ (1984) a precious life-enhancing spice is guarded by monster worms on a distant planet. Paul Atreides (MacLachlan) is the Prince who leads his people against the territorial designs of the Harkonnens, and discovers he is earmarked for an even greater destiny. In surrealist nightmare ‘Eraserhead’ (1977) Henry (John Nance) lives in a grimy tenement block set against a grey industrial landscape. When his girlfriend (Charlotte Stewart) becomes pregnant, she moves in and the couple try to look after their new baby: a slimy bundle of tissue whose screaming drives them to insanity. In ‘Lost Highway’ (1997) saxophonist Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) receives a series of videos showing the exterior, then the interior, of the house he shares with his wife, Renee (Patricia Arquette). Then, after meeting a mysterious man at a party, he receives another tape showing him with Renee’s dismembered corpse. Found guilty of her murder, Fred is put in prison, where he inexplicably transforms into another person – mechanic Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty) – who is set free and goes to work for Mr Eddy (Robert Loggia), a gangster who is dating Alice (Arquette again), Renee’s blonde doppelgänger. ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ (1992), the cinematic prequel to the ‘Twin Peaks’ television series, traces the events leading up to the death of troubled teen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). The saga begins when local police discover the corpse of a young woman named Teresa Banks. The FBI arrive to investigate and turn up a set of unusual circumstances, only to have two of their agents disappear without trace. Yet while the federal investigation continues under the leadership of the newly-assigned Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), Banks’s friend Laura Palmer sinks deeper and deeper into a personal hell involving nightmare visions, cocaine abuse and doomed relationships. Finally, in ‘Wild at Heart’ (1990), a twisted, comedic homage to ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ex-con Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lulu (Laura Dern) are madly in love. But as they set off on the run from both the law and Lulu’s mother, their attempt to leave one life for another leads them to some of the weirdest people and places in America.
