Sunao Katabuchi directs this Japanese animated feature based on the novelisation of Nobuko Takagi’s autobiography. Millennia ago, Hofu City in the Yamaguchi prefecture was the site of the ancient capital city Suo no Kuni, the only remnants of which are a few scattered ruins. In 1955, a young girl named Shinko (voice of Mayuko Fukuda) spends her time in her elementary school and exploring the fields of her quiet little town. She constantly fantasises about the way her home must have been a thousand years before and when Shinko befriends another girl who has moved from Tokyo, Kiiko (Nako Mizusawa), they both gain a magical insight into that ancient world.

From Sunao Katabuchi (director of In This Corner of the World, Assistant Director of Kiki’s Delivery Service and director of Black Lagoon) and animation production by Madhouse (One Punch Man, Perfect Blue). Funded with Kickstarter Shinko, is a third grade elementary school student with a magically active imagination. She spends a lot of her time listening to her grandfather’s history lessons, imagining what her town was like 1,000 years earlier. One day, a sad and sombre girl called Kiiko transfers to Shinko’s school from Tokyo. A strong friendship soon grows between the two girls as Shinko helps Kiiko come out of her shell and deal with her loss – all thanks to their adventures, both imagined and real. Contains the film on Blu-Ray and DVD with both the English dub and the original Japanese track with English subtitles.
