Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotten) wishes to marry Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello), but she refuses him in favour of the wealthy Wilbur Minafur. Years later Eugene returns, now himself a success through his invention of an automobile. When Wilbur dies, Eugene attempts to rekindle his romance with Isabel, but her spoilt son George (Tim Holt) interferes. This affects both George’s own affair with Eugene’s daughter, Lucy (Anne Baxter), and the Amberson family’s waning fortunes.
