The summer term episodes of the eighth season of the BBC drama set in a failing inner city comprehensive. Waterloo Road’s Head Teacher Michael Byrne (Alec Newman) continues to preside over the school and the variety of problems it faces. In this series a number of new teachers including Audrey McFall (Georgie Glen) and the alcoholic Christine Mulgrew (Laurie Brett) join the cast and bring their virtues and vices to the education of Waterloo’s pupils.

But she has eyes for Kevin leading to the sexiest chess game ever and a whole lot of trouble for Kevin including Dynasty’s hot-headed mother and a TV-show that fi nds him face to face with an unwelcome past. Grantly Budgen has fallen into a coma and his wife Maggie is putting all her hope in Tom Clarkson; soft-spoken Audrey fi nds herself engaged to a Malawian immigrant; one new teacher has a hidden agenda; another brings a sharp tongue to teaching mandarin. As the term draws to a close so will many of the problems facing the school its teachers and pupils. But the completely unexpected is always just around the corner at Waterloo Road.
